As more Utahns turn to takeout food, some restaurant owners are encouraging them to order directly rather than with third-party delivery apps.
Customers often don’t realize that 25% to 35% of their order goes to services like Grubhub, DoorDash, Uber Eats and Postmates.
Prakash Sharma, owner of Cool Bro’s Pizza near downtown Salt Lake City says:
If they knew about it, I think they would be ordering from us directly.”
Sharma said he appreciates the exposure that the apps provide — free marketing, more orders — but not the large chunk they take.
Grubhub takes the highest amount, he said, at 35%.
He feels DoorDash is more reasonable at 25%. He’s also on a pizza-specific app called Slice, which he said was reasonable.
Calling or ordering online allows his business to keep more of the money. He says:
My customers would be paying a lot less because they charge my customers a delivery fee and they charge me a fee, too.”
The money from delivery apps does, in part, support local drivers. One woman on the 2News Facebook page wrote that the job provided food for her family.
Lorin Smaha, who owns Freshies Lobster in Park City and Salt Lake City said she increases prices on the app to compensate for the fees:
They take 25% of the sale, which is more than I would make on that sale, by a lot.”
Smaha calls DoorDash “another avenue” for her business and a good option for people who can’t break away on their lunch break or for older people who don’t feel comfortable driving.
However, ordering on her company’s website is best “as far as quality and then just being able to support our business,” she said.
